When things get tough, what is your attitude? Is the cup half full or half empty? Does the cloud have silver lining or is it all wishful thinking? When it’s tough everything seems to be that much more of problem, doesn’t it?

Things are not helped by television and radio commentators who seem to relish in bad news. The worse it gets, the happier they seem to be.

On the other hand, if you don’t take some note of what’s happening and live your life in dream, there’s likely to be the odd shock or two waiting for you.

It’s difficult to know who to believe sometimes, isn’t it? We take in facts, but do we question them? Do we ask enough questions? It’s fact that we take decisions based on 5% of the available information. It’s no wonder that our decision making is sometimes little suspect.

We could make things so much better for ourselves if we asked more questions. The more questions you ask, the better able you are to be able to make informed decisions.

Let’s take our health as an example here. Too many of us ignore our health. In particular we ignore our weight and its effect on our health. We keep doing things we know are not good for us. We keep eating far too many calories. Eventually the day comes when the bill has to be paid for our lack of attention. Our health starts to deteriorate and the possibility of contracting life threatening disease comes closer.

There are some striking similarities with the current financial crisis, aren’t there? Living lie, allowing problems to stack up, ignoring reality, putting the future in jeopardy…all too familiar!

It’s not all bad news! A crisis can also be an opportunity. It doesn’t do any harm to be brought up short and faced with the reality of one’s own mortality from time to time. It can be very useful prompt to take action. We might all be faced with the reality of having to cut-back, it might also be an opportunity to slim down as well. There is no time like the present to examine our behaviors and start to learn new habits – slim habits. Slimmer and healthier, we will be better able to cope with what lies ahead – good or bad.
